For many decades, the name “Mahindra” has been synonymous with the world’s best tractors; in fact, the company has been India’s leading tractor manufacturer since the 1980s and remains so to this day. Mahindra started small as a family operation in the city of Mumbai, but it has since grown by leaps and bounds to become one of the globe’s biggest manufacturers of all kinds of farm equipment, tractors included.

Early Days

Following the end of World War II, brothers KC and JC Mahindra joined up with their business partner Ghulam Mohammed to found the Mahindra & Mohammed company in the city of Mumbai, India, on October 2, 1945. At first, this company focused solely on steel production, but they soon expanded out into building light commercial vehicles, specifically for the Willys Jeep brand.

In 1947, India and Pakistan became two separate entities, and Ghulam Mohammed went to Pakistan to become the country’s first minister of finance. The Mahindra brothers decided to simply rename their venture “Mahindra & Mahindra” after Mohammed’s departure and continued their work.

Mahindra & Mahindra went public in 1955 and put its stocks on the Bombay Stock Exchange three years later. After a joint venture with the American agricultural manufacturer International Harvester, Mahindra finally landed in the tractor market, where they excelled beyond anyone’s expectations. Within 25 years, the company was the largest purveyor of tractors in all of India.

Mahindra Group

As the company expanded its reach, Mahindra began to acquire several other industrial enterprises, including Automobiles Peugeot France, International Tractor Company of India, British Telecom and Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited. The need for a conglomerate arose with all of these acquisitions, so the Mahindra Group was born.

By 1994, it was time for this group to split into its constituent divisions, including IT, Infrastructure Development Services, Steel Trading, Financial Services, Automotive Services and, of course, Farm Equipment. All of this led to Mahindra placing 17th on the 2018 list of Fortune India 500 companies, which is no small feat.

Agricultural Equipment

It’s hard to think of a type of agricultural equipment that Mahindra doesn’t offer, since the company has a whole division dedicated to tractors and other useful farm machinery.
